- Uber is steering towards a greener future, with the expansion of Uber Green trips across North America.
- The ride-hailing company recently announced it was expanding its electric vehicle and hybrid ride option to over 1,400 cities in the U.S. and Canada.
- Riders in cities such as New York City, Washington D.C., Austin, Houston, Miami, and Winnipeg can now opt for the lower-emission "green trip" option.
- In September last year, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi pledged that:
- One - Every vehicle on its platform will be electric by 2040, and two - the company would contribute $800 million through 2025 to help drivers switch to battery-powered vehicles.
- "This 2025 commitment is part of our longer-term strategy to go 100% electric in all major cities in the U.S., Canada, and Europe by 2030, and 100% electric in all cities around the world by 2040."
- The company said drivers will receive an extra $0.50 directly from a $1 rider surcharge for every Uber Green trip completed.
- Uber also said drivers can now rent a zero-emission vehicle through rental car service provider Avis.
- The company’s plan to reduce emissions follows years of criticism by environmental groups and city officials over the pollution and congestion caused by some of its existing fleet.
