How Losing SoundCloud Would Change Music

Tidal, which laid off 40% of its employees Thursday, has long struggled to maintain both stability and independence. But the service's distinctive contributions to music listening can't be denied.

On Thursday, SoundCloud shut down two of its four offices, laying off 173 people in San Francisco and London. In a blog post, cofounder and CEO Alexander Ljung announced the firings:

SoundCloud has evolved considerably in the last nine years since it was founded. SoundCloud has made some distressing decisions to remain competitive with firms reportedly interested in acquiring it. Ljung and Co. had to decide whether or not to stay in the new era or make way as discovery moved from customer to maker. They made contracts with all three main labels in order to keep copyrighted music on the site, and they even developed a (pretty messy) premium subscription service to compete with Spotify and Apple Music. The company intruded upon our listening experience by inserting advertising in order to pay "premium" artists based on ad-based revenue, all for the sake of remaining independent. But now that it's used up all of its lard, it's begun to break down the muscle.

Is SoundCloud for sale? And the disappearance of streaming giant would jeopardize independent music. But you can download it for free by this tool: Soundcloud to mp3 converter. Let me explain why, but first a tale:

Kanye West's familial feuds were aired out in public on the morning of January 1, 2016, when Kanye West premiered his song "Real Friends," which was produced by Boi-1da and featured a grayish, genuine Boi-1da beat. "Real Friends" was like "Welcome to Heartbreak," but more levelheaded and without as much singing. There were ripples caused by any other time Kanye does anything. Old Kanye returned before the massive Life of Pablo was released a month later, when the openness and, more crucially, rapping on "Real Friends" and the first half of "No More Parties in L.A." suggested it. (He wasn't. Isn't. Never will be.) The more fascinating ripple, however, came from an 18-year-old rapper and producer from Kansas City named Rory Fresco.

"Lowkey" by Fresco was discovered by SoundCloud's track recommendation system while "Real Friends" was being played. (The technology has since been modified, but it suggests more music to you based on what you just listened to.) Within a day, "Lowkey" grew from 5,000 plays to 150,000. The original version of "Real Friends," which had 559K plays at the time, was replaced with the album version, which now has 1.13 million plays. Kanye's song "Lowkey" has now been streamed over 5.5 million times on SoundCloud. Because Kanye is so in demand, other platforms offer access to his music and sales of it are available elsewhere because he is Kanye, which lowers the actual number of SoundCloud plays "Real Friends" has gotten. However, before the song was made public, 22 people were paid to write and produce music — as a primary source of income I mean — before it was touched by anybody else. Lowkey was created by Fresco in his bedroom, and I'm willing to bet it was uploaded from the same location. With two minutes of buffering time, no assistance, and Wi-Fi connection, you may get really close to your target audience.

This is one of the many excellent and ethical aspects about SoundCloud, which is likewise excellent and honorable. Although music that was produced in a makeshift closet booth and music that was most likely recorded in some magnificent spaceship studio are not on equal footing, they at least occupy the same playing field. With its $9.99-a-month plan, Apple Music additionally provides a far more consistent user experience than Spotify or other streaming services with "exclusives" and less democratic audiences. Apple Music is curated by artists; Spotify's playlists are influenced by the needs of the recording industry. SoundCloud is akin to a free-for-all in comparison to the other two. SoundCloud is unlike the other two in that everyone and anybody can hear and be heard, making it more of a free-for-all. Music shows up on SoundCloud before it does anywhere else frequently as a result of its lack of gatekeepers.

It was a reworking of "Plastic 100 C" by Awful Records DJ and producer Dexter Dukarus, which I ran across while allowing SoundCloud's automated play to take me where it would. The remix is no longer available on SoundCloud, YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you go to obtain your music. But I experienced it; it was true; and it altered me. Despite being predetermined by numbers, much of it appears to be left to chance. You must shout about your victory when you win.

There are even more reasons to adore the platform. You can see what everyone else is feeling at the height of a song's peaks and the depth of its valleys, in real time, with the comment section's layout. You follow people you want to follow, listen to music they repost. If you're feeling froggy, you can submit your own in minutes with minimal financial investment. (I did this with an instrumental constructed from a V for Vendetta sound bite in college and it was taken down shortly after because of sample clearance. This was for the best; it was horrible.) Occasionally, the autoplay function drops a pitched-down version of D'Angelo's "Spanish Joint" on your head, causing you to listen to it repeatedly until you despise it.

Soulection's growth was fueled by fan interaction on Facebook, Twitter, and SoundCloud. Joe Kay and Andre Power launched an entire brand, Soulection, as a result of fan interaction on Facebook, Twitter, and SoundCloud. Despite the fact that their weekly radio show — which is hosted by Kay and has now aired its 315th edition — is now broadcasted on Beats 1 official home two years ago, each episode still gets uploaded to SoundCloud where I prefer to listen to them every Sunday. The user interface is far superior...well, at least it isn't chaotic.

SoundCloud has given rise to entire genres. Hundreds of DJs have gone from bootlegging records in their basement to touring as a result of the larger audience they can reach with it. They've also progressed from having most of their mixes pulled for copyright infringement to just some of them being so yanked. There's no doubt about it: SoundCloud is responsible for Bryson Tiller's existence. If you're cool with it, I'll add that there's no Chance the Rapper without it. In fact, "SoundCloud Rapper" has evolved from being synonymous with "struggle rapper" to a serious aesthetic to an aspersion. I'll own up to it: even though it does little to characterize the subgenre it half-parodies, artists like Lil Pump and Lil Peep create lo-fi rap. I'm still not sure if it's any good or not. "SoundCloud Rapper" originally referred to someone who was putting their music out there without the aid of a major record label. "Rapper," like any other musician, might have been used interchangeably with "podcaster."

If the service is taken down, so will that ease of access and upward mobility. We'd all be poorer if it were to vanish.

God, I hope that at least this streaming service will stay because there are too many independent artists that I support, and I don't want to lose them.

It's great that you support independent artists, but I believe there are some platforms that can help you do that more effectively. Personally, I use this audio exchange platform https://www.emanate.live/ , and with its own cryptocurrency, the price for the subscription is not that high, so I think you might want to check it out.

I'm afraid to imagine it at all because for me it will be mourning like for many others I think. In general, I realized a long time ago that it was very stressful for me to pay for a subscription every month, and then I decided that I should find a website through which I could download music without any problems. And it was https://mp3juice.link because it's fast and free!
