A : I hope it dosen't rain this weekend.

B : Why? You got something special planned?

A : Yeah. My parents just got some really nice patio furniture and they're having some people over for a barbecue. So, I'm just hoping we get some good weather.

B : Well, you know the forecast gets it wrong all the time. Hopefully, they're wrong again this time.

I hope / I'm hoping / Hopefully, ...의 미묘한 의미 차이 이해하기.

• I hope ... (something happens)
  • ... 했으면 좋겠다.
  • (무언가를) 바라는 마음이 지금 막 생겨서 표현한 것!
• I'm hoping ...
  • ... 하기를 바라고 있다.
  • (무언가를) 바라는 마음이 예전에 이미 생겼고, 지금도 그렇게 바라고 있는 것
  • 처음부터 I'm hoping ... 이라고 말하면 어색할 수 있음
  • hope보다는 미래에 ..하길 바라는 의미가 있음
  • I hope 보다 더 구체적인 답을 바라는 마음이 있음.
    • expresses a little more sense of actively waiting to find out the answer.
• I hope와 I'm hoping은 구분해서 써 주는 것이 좋다.
• Hopefully, ...
  • ... 하기를 바란다.
  • (대화 상대와) 공통적으로 바라는 바를 이야기할 때 사용
  • 말 하는 사람뿐만이 아닌 그 자리에서 대화를 나누는 사람들이 공통으로 바라는 마음을 얘기할 때 쓰는 표현
• Hopefully, ... 는 I hope ..., I'm hoping ... 을 대체 가능 - (대화 내용을 봐야 하지만)
  • what about ..? how about ...? -> what about..? 가 how about...? 을 대체할 수 있지만 반대는 불가능.
  • 이 경우도 비슷 : Hopefully, ... 는 I hope ..., I'm hoping ... 을 대체 가능하지만 반대는 불가능함.

  • invite someone over ... 의 캐주얼한 표현.
  • 누군가를 ...에 초대하다 라는 의미

  • ...를 잘못 짚다. 잘못하다. (못 맞추다)
  • = be wrong과 의미 같음 (틀리다)

  • 가능성 있는 바람을 표현할 때 사용.
