Collaborative Design: Bridging the Gap Between Design and Reality

Today at work, I encountered a classic example of how design and real-world conditions can sometimes clash. While working on a renovation project, I reviewed the design and compared it to the actual site conditions. I noticed that the orientation of an attached bathroom door didn't fit the available space. If placed according to the design, the door would either touch the wash basin or the bathroom commode. Opening it outward would interfere with the main door of the room or the column wall, reducing walking space and causing discomfort. This highlights the critical importance of practical, on-site evaluation.

This experience underscores the importance of on-site visits and close collaboration among architects, interior designers, and civil engineers throughout the project. By working together and considering both the aesthetic vision and the practical realities of construction, we can effectively bridge the gap between design intent and successful, functional implementations.

Architects design dreams, engineers make sure they don’t collapse into nightmares.

And the building services engineers makes it habitable. We all have important roles to play. Therefore we need to adopt a co-design approach to designing buildings.
This is a huge misconception.

If everyone on the team can put their egos aside and work with each other, this works, otherwise it is a constant battle. I work with several engineers and have found valuable assistance from them. I have often had to explain my design intent a couple of times so we could get the desired effect, but, not because I am right and they are wrong, but because I had to learn on my end what they needed to hear to get my points across and they needed to learn on their end what I needed to hear to get their points across. Once we learned how each other communicated, it became much easier to work together.
