A backplane is a high-speed communication circuit board that connects multiple drives to a controller.
The backplane is a key component for data flow to and from the storage devices to the system board.
Backplane characteristics
- Powers the drives.
- Provides SATA, SAS, NVMe, and E3.S data I/O connections.
- Failure can disconnect one or all drives.
- Cable connectivity issues can fail to deliver data I/O to the drives.
- Many backplane options across all generations of servers.
LOM
The LAN On Motherboard (LOM) provides 2x 1 GB Ethernet ports for connectivity to the PowerEdge servers.
기본적으로 마더보드에 장착된 NIC 카드를 말한다. 즉, 시스템보드에 기본 내장되어 있는 NIC.
LOM이 고장날 경우, 전체 시스템 보드를 교체할 필요 없이 네트워크 카드를 개별적으로 교체할 수 있음
OCP
The Open Compute Project (OCP) cards are network cards that connect to the PCIe bus.
메인보드 위에 직접 내장되어 있는 LOM과 달리
메인보드의 OCP 전용 커넥터에 꽂는 NIC 모듈임
➡️ 메인보드에 장착되지만 ‘탈착 가능한 모듈형’이라는 점이 핵심!
PowerEdge servers use Small Form Factor (SFF) OCP cards.
다음은 OCP 카드의 장점 :
- 탈착 가능한 네트워크 카드
- 10Gb, 25Gb, 50Gb 등 다양한 네트워크 속도 옵션을 선택 가능
- 일반적인 PCIe 슬롯을 사용하지 않음
- 이전 세대 서버에서 사용되던 NDC(Network Daughter Card) 를 대체
Important: The DC-SCM, OCP, and NDC are not hot-swappable components.
RIO
The Rear Input Output card (RIO) is an expansion card that provides additional connectivity options in the PowerEdge servers. The RIO card provides scalability, flexibility, and increases connectivity options.
The Rear Input Output card (RIO) provides:
- iDRAC port (RIO has an iDRAC port, but the iDRAC chipset is on the system board.)
- Video Graphics Array (VGA)
- USB
- ID Button
- Chassis intrusion switch cable
- Optional serial connector
17G DC-SCM
The DC-SCM is equivalent to a daughter card that combines a rear I/O, iDRAC, and TPM.
For external access, the card has: (실제 달려있는 것들)
- iDRAC port
- Video Graphics Array (VGA)
- USB ports
Integrated on to the card are: (탑재된 기능들)

- TPM
- Attic card connection - needed to connect the optional KVM left control panel
