Douglass Engelbart

Forefather of modern GUI

  • oN-Line System(NLS)
  • 1964 - created the very first computer mouse
  • 1968 demonstration on modern features of modern computing (bitmapped graphics, video conferencing, word processing, and collaborative real-time editing of documents) - "mother of all demos"
  • It was way ahead of its time and failed commercially, but the influence was huge.

Xerox Alto

1973, The first GUI computer

  • To make the interace familiar and easier to use, xerox treated the 2D screen like the top of a desk, or desktop - desktop metaphor
  • many papers can be laid out on a desk - user can open up several programs up with windows.
  • Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer - WIMP interface - most desktop GUI use it today.
  • buttons, checkbox, sliders, tabs, ... drawn from real world objects to make them familiar.
  • GUI use event-driven programming - code can fire at any time and in different orders, in response to events. Events are user driven (click, keypress, scroll, etc)
  • Xerox Star, 1981 - file cabinet metaphor for file system
  • cut, copy, paste - metapohr drawn from editing on typewriters
  • Word processor with What you see is what you get - WYSIWYG

Thoughts

이번 편은 기술적인 내용보다는 제품개발과 경영 관련 내용이었는데 재미있었다. 긜고 영어공부가 되서 좋다. 캐리엔은 생소한 단어와 표현을 많이 사용한다. 나중에 원서로 영어공부 하고 싶다는 생각이 들었다.
